Adult piano lessons in Knoxville, TN.
Most adults who want to play piano were told, once, that they had missed their window. They hadn't. At Highland Piano Studios in Alcoa — about twenty minutes from downtown Knoxville — we've spent decades teaching mature beginners, returning players, and seniors who simply want music in the house again.
Patrick Sr. has taught for over forty years and builds specialized courses for seniors and advanced young adults. Patrick II brings fifteen years of teaching, plus guitar, Oud, and language instruction. Between them, lessons are shaped around the student in front of them — not a standard curriculum.
Why adults move faster here
The Highland Method, built for grown-up learners.
Play music you enjoy
You start with real music you chose, not a decade of exercise books. Repertoire is picked from what you actually want to hear yourself play.
Understand, don't memorize
We teach chords, harmony, and structure so you can improvise and express yourself musically — the fastest route from lesson to living-room playing.
Paced for a working life
Twenty to thirty minutes of focused practice, scheduled around jobs, grandchildren, and travel. Progress is measured in months, not conservatory years.
Comfort matters
Hand strain, stiffness, and vision are planned for from lesson one. Technique is adapted rather than forced, which is central to our senior courses.

Common questions
Am I too old to start piano?
No. Patrick Sr. has spent four decades teaching adults and seniors, including students who sat down at a keyboard for the very first time in their sixties and seventies. Adults typically progress faster than children in the early stages because they already understand patterns, counting, and how to practice deliberately.
How is the Highland Method different from traditional lessons?
Traditional lesson books move page by page through exercises before you play anything you recognize. The Highland Method teaches the underlying structure of music — chords, harmony, and shape — so you learn to play music you actually enjoy, and you can improvise and express yourself musically rather than only reproducing a page.
Do I need to read sheet music first?
Not to begin. Reading is taught alongside playing, and many adult students read music comfortably within their first year. If you already read, we start from where you are.
Do I need a piano at home?
You need something to practice on, but it doesn't have to be a grand piano. We tune, repair, appraise, and sell instruments, and our instrument-finding service locates the right piano at a price that works for you.
How much should I practice?
Twenty to thirty focused minutes most days outperforms one long weekend session. Lessons are built around a realistic adult schedule, not a conservatory one.
